A Civil Project Director in Australia is a senior leadership role within the construction industry, responsible for overseeing the complete lifecycle of large-scale civil engineering projects, including planning, design, construction, and delivery, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to required quality standards, while managing key stakeholders and navigating complex technical and regulatory aspects; often requiring extensive experience in civil engineering, project management, and leadership skills to navigate complex infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, utilities, and large-scale developments. 


Key responsibilities may include:

  • Developing comprehensive project plans, including timelines, budgets, resource allocation, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies. 
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, government agencies, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders, managing expectations and addressing concerns. 
  • Reviewing design documents, ensuring compliance with engineering standards, and providing technical guidance to the project team. 
  • Leading and motivating a multidisciplinary project team, including engineers, architects, construction managers, and site supervisors. 
  • Negotiating and managing contracts with subcontractors, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to contract specifications. 
  • Monitoring project costs, identifying potential cost overruns, and implementing corrective measures to stay within budget. 
  • Implementing quality control procedures to ensure project deliverables meet the required standards. 
  • Identifying and proactively mitigating potential risks throughout the project lifecycle. 
  • Preparing regular progress reports, communicating project status updates to stakeholders, and addressing any issues promptly. 
  • Ensuring adherence to all relevant regulations, permits, and safety standards. 


Required skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • Extensive experience in managing large-scale civil engineering projects
  • Proven leadership and team management skills
  • Strong technical knowledge of civil engineering principles and construction practices
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in project management methodologies and software
  • Understanding of relevant Australian regulations and compliance requirements
