A Civil Quantity Surveyor in Australia is a construction professional responsible for estimating, monitoring, and managing the costs of civil engineering projects throughout their lifecycle, from the initial design phase to completion, by analyzing construction drawings, specifying materials, and negotiating contracts with contractors to ensure projects are delivered within budget and schedule; they work closely with architects, engineers, and project managers to identify potential cost variations and manage any changes that may occur during construction. 


Key responsibilities:

  • Analyze architectural and engineering drawings to prepare detailed cost estimates for materials, labor, and equipment, creating comprehensive cost plans for the project. 
  • Develop tender documents, including Bills of Quantities (BOQs), to facilitate contractor bidding and select the most cost-effective option. 
  • Review and negotiate contracts with contractors, ensuring compliance with specifications and managing variations to the design that may impact costs. 
  • Track project expenditure against the approved budget, identifying areas of potential cost overruns and implementing corrective measures. 
  • Assess the impact of design changes on project costs, negotiate variations with contractors, and issue variation orders as needed. 
  • Prepare regular progress reports detailing project costs, highlighting any issues and providing forecasts for future expenditures. 
  • Monitor project cashflow, ensuring timely payments to contractors and managing financial risks.
  • Assist in resolving cost-related disputes between stakeholders through mediation or arbitration if necessary. 


Required skills:

  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of civil engineering construction methods, materials, and industry standards. 
  • Cost Estimating Skills: Proficiency in using cost estimating software and methodologies to accurately calculate project costs. 
  • Contract Law: Knowledge of construction contracts and contract administration practices. 
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex data and identify potential cost risks. 
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication with project team members, contractors, and clients to manage expectations and address concerns. 
  • Negotiation Skills: Ability to negotiate favorable contract terms with contractors. 


Relevant qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field 
  • Registration with the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS)
