An Oil and Gas Cost Manager in Australia is responsible for overseeing and managing the financial aspects of oil and gas projects, including budgeting, cost estimation, cost control, and financial reporting, ensuring projects are delivered within budget constraints while adhering to industry standards and regulations, collaborating closely with project teams and stakeholders to identify potential cost risks and implement mitigation strategies throughout the project lifecycle. 


Key responsibilities may include:

Cost Planning and Budgeting:

  • Develop detailed project cost estimates and budgets based on project scope, design, and market conditions. 
  • Analyze cost breakdown structures (CBS) and identify cost drivers. 
  • Prepare and present comprehensive cost plans to project stakeholders. 

Cost Control and Monitoring:

  • Track project expenditures against the approved budget, identifying variances and potential cost overruns. 
  • Conduct regular cost reviews and analysis to identify areas for cost optimization. 
  • Implement cost control measures and corrective actions to mitigate cost risks. 

Contract Management:

  • Review and negotiate contracts with vendors and subcontractors to ensure cost competitiveness. 
  • Monitor contract compliance and manage change orders to minimize cost impacts. 

Reporting and Analysis:

  • Generate comprehensive cost reports and dashboards for project stakeholders, highlighting key cost trends and variances. 
  • Analyze cost data to identify cost-saving opportunities and implement improvements. 

Stakeholder Management:

  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, procurement teams, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment on cost objectives. 
  • Communicate cost updates and potential risks to key decision-makers effectively. 


Required skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, engineering, or a related field 
  • Proven experience in cost management within the oil and gas industry, preferably in upstream or downstream operations 
  • Strong understanding of project management principles and cost control methodologies 
  • Proficiency in cost estimating software and financial analysis tools 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams 
  • Familiarity with Australian industry regulations and standards related to oil and gas projects
