Key responsibilities of a Construction Estimator in Australia:
- Cost estimation: Accurately calculate the cost of materials, labor, and subcontractors required for a construction project based on blueprints, specifications, and site assessments.
- Plan interpretation: Thoroughly review project plans and specifications to identify potential cost implications and ensure accurate cost estimations.
- Tender preparation: Prepare detailed cost breakdowns and competitive tenders for new projects, including timeframes and contingency planning.
- Subcontractor management: Obtain and evaluate quotes from subcontractors, negotiating prices and terms to optimize project costs.
- Site visits: Conduct site inspections to assess project conditions, potential challenges, and identify any necessary adjustments to cost estimates.
- Software proficiency: Utilize construction estimating software to generate accurate cost calculations and reports.
- Compliance with regulations: Stay updated on relevant building codes, safety standards, and legal requirements.
- Collaboration: Work closely with architects, engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure project goals are met within budget.
Required skills and qualifications:
- Technical knowledge: Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and industry standards
- Analytical skills: Ability to analyze complex project plans and accurately calculate costs
- Estimating software proficiency: Experience with construction estimating software like Buildxact, HCE, or similar
- Communication skills: Effective communication with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams
- Attention to detail: High level of accuracy and ability to identify potential cost risks
- Relevant qualifications: Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Estimating) or equivalent industry certification is preferred
