A "Civil Leading Hand" in Australia is an experienced construction worker who leads a small team on a civil engineering project, overseeing their daily tasks, ensuring safety compliance, quality standards, and project deadlines while providing technical guidance and hands-on support to achieve project goals, often reporting directly to a foreman or site supervisor; essentially acting as a key on-site leader for a crew within a civil construction environment.
Key responsibilities of a Civil Leading Hand:
- Manage and direct a crew of labourers and tradespeople, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and providing on-the-job training.
- Enforce all safety protocols, identify potential hazards, and address safety concerns immediately.
- Ensure work is completed to project specifications and quality standards.
- Assist in planning daily work schedules, coordinating materials and equipment needs.
- Possess in-depth knowledge of civil construction techniques, including earthworks, concrete pouring, drainage systems, and site preparation.
- Communicate effectively with site supervisors, other trades, clients, and subcontractors regarding project progress and issues.
- Identify and resolve on-site challenges, including technical difficulties and work stoppages.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Proven experience in civil construction, including site work and various trades
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and drawings
- Understanding of relevant safety regulations and procedures
- Relevant construction qualifications or tickets (depending on the project)
