Marine Engineer Jobs
A Marine Engineer in Australia is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical and electrical systems on board a ship, including propulsion engines, power generation, auxiliary systems, refrigeration units, and steering mechanisms, ensuring the vessel's safe and efficient operation while at sea; requiring a strong understanding of marine engineering principles, compliance with maritime regulations, and the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues on board.
Key responsibilities may include:
- Maintenance and repair: Performing routine inspections, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repairing malfunctions on all shipboard machinery including diesel engines, generators, pumps, boilers, and electrical systems.
- System monitoring: Continuously monitoring vital engine parameters such as temperature, pressure, and oil levels to identify potential issues and take corrective action.
- Fuel management: Overseeing fuel consumption and ensuring efficient fuel usage.
- Damage control: Responding to emergencies such as flooding or machinery breakdowns, taking necessary actions to maintain ship stability and safety.
- Compliance with regulations: Adhering to all maritime safety regulations and standards related to marine engineering
- Documentation and reporting: Maintaining detailed logs of maintenance activities, repairs, and operational data
- Leadership and teamwork: Supervising and coordinating the work of junior engineering crew members
Required skills and qualifications:
- Education: A recognized Marine Engineering qualification from a maritime academy or equivalent
- Licenses: Relevant marine engineering licenses as required by Australian maritime authorities
- Technical knowledge: Expertise in diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, refrigeration systems, and steam plants
- Problem-solving skills: Ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues under pressure
- Physical fitness: Ability to work in demanding physical conditions onboard a ship
- Communication skills: Effective communication with the ship's crew and officers to report issues and coordinate operations
