A Quantity Surveyor in the Australian construction industry is responsible for estimating and managing the costs of a construction project throughout its lifecycle, from the design phase to completion, by analyzing plans, calculating material quantities, preparing tender documents, monitoring expenditures against the budget, and managing contract variations to ensure the project is delivered within financial constraints; they often collaborate closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients to maintain cost control and resolve any contractual disputes that may arise.
Key responsibilities of a Quantity Surveyor in Australia:
Cost estimating: Analyze architectural and engineering drawings to calculate the quantities of materials needed and estimate project costs, including labor, materials, and contingencies.
Cost planning: Develop detailed cost plans and budgets for different project stages, including feasibility studies, design development, and construction.
Tender preparation: Prepare tender documents, including Bills of Quantities (BOQs), to facilitate accurate contractor bids.
Contract administration: Review and negotiate contracts with contractors, ensuring compliance with contract terms and managing variations to the design.
Progress monitoring: Regularly monitor project progress against the budget, identify cost variances, and implement corrective measures.
Variation management: Assess the impact of design changes on costs, negotiate variations with contractors, and issue variation orders.
Payment certification: Review contractor progress claims and certify payments based on work completed.

Skills and qualifications for a Quantity Surveyor in Australia:
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and industry standards
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in construction estimating software and cost planning tools
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills to interact with various stakeholders
- Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy
- A recognized qualification in Quantity Surveying, such as a degree from the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS)
