Substation engineer Jobs

A Substation Engineer in Australia is responsible for designing, installing, maintaining, and upgrading electrical substations that support power distribution and transmission networks. They work with high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) systems, ensuring reliability, safety, and compliance with Australian electrical standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Substation Design & Engineering: Develop electrical layouts, schematics, and protection systems for substations.
  • Installation & Commissioning: Oversee the construction, testing, and commissioning of new substations and upgrades.
  • Power System Analysis: Conduct load flow, fault analysis, and relay coordination studies.
  • Equipment Selection & Integration: Specify and integrate transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, and protection relays.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure compliance with Australian Electrical Standards (AS 2067, AS/NZS 3000, and NER).
  • Project Management: Collaborate with utility providers, contractors, and stakeholders to deliver substation projects on time and within budget.
  • Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve faults in electrical systems, ensuring continuous operation.
  • Sustainability & Innovation: Implement modern technologies, such as digital substations and renewable energy integration.


Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of HV and MV electrical systems (typically 11kV – 500kV).
  • Experience with substation design software (e.g., ETAP, DigSILENT, AutoCAD, Revit).
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems, protection relays, and switchgear.
  • Familiarity with Australian Grid Codes and National Electricity Rules (NER).
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to manage projects and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.


Job Requirements:

  • 2-5 years of experience in substation design, construction, or maintenance.
  • Familiarity with utility networks (e.g., TransGrid, Powerlink, Ausgrid, Western Power).
  • Ability to conduct site visits and work in both office and field environments.
  • High voltage (HV) switching qualification (advantageous).
