How to Enter

To make yourself stand out and improve your chances of securing a Hydraulic Modeller job in New Zealand, it’s recommended to first complete a Bachelor of Engineering degree and specialise in Civil Engineering, or anything related to water, sewer or storm system management.

Typical Responsibilities

The day-to-day responsibilities of a Hydraulic Modeller could include all or some of the following:

Engaging clients and visiting sites to understand the needs of the project
Using computer modelling software to plan drainage, sewerage and flood control systems
Calculating costs and budgets
Assessing the environmental impact of proposed work
Keeping up-to-date with all legislation changes and ensuring work completed is compliant
Ensuring Health & Safety standards are met
Conducting onsite inspections during project progression
Maintaining drainage, sewerage and flood control systems

Progression

Many Hydraulic Modellers progress their careers and become self-employed contractors, consultants or shift their focus to Project Management, Construction Management, Planning, Estimation or Health & Safety. In addition, they could also specialise as Coastal Engineers and work on protecting New Zealand’s coasts and rivers.
