​How to Enter

To secure a Survey Technical job, New Zealand employers expect you to have completed a three-year National Diploma in Surveying (Level 6). In addition, the following personal requirements can greatly boost your employability:


  • Highly accurate with a great attention to detail
  • Methodical
  • Patient and able to work well under pressure and to deadlines
  • Able to work independently as well as a part of a team


Graduates of a National Diploma of Surveying (Level 6) qualifications are eligible to become a technical associate member of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors. This membership will help will help provide you access to professional development courses.


Typical Responsibilities

A Survey Technician can expect to do some or all of the following job responsibilities:


  • Using survey equipment to measure and plot out land divisions
  • Processing land survey data
  • Creating and understanding land survey plans
  • Creating reports of data and measurements
  • Supervising Survey Assistants


Progression

With further study of surveying, a Survey Technician can become a Graduate Surveyor. Following two years of practical work, a series of tests and a presentation, Surveyors can then continue progressing their careers and become a Licensed Cadastral Surveyor. Alternatively, a Survey Technician can specialise as a Survey Photogrammetrist or Aerial Survey Technician.


Salary Range

Entry: $32K – 40K per annum (NZD)

Experienced: 35K – 55K per annum (NZD)
