A Telecommunications Lines worker in Australia is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing external telecommunications equipment such as aerial lines, underground cables, radio and mobile phone antennae, by physically climbing poles, working in pits, and utilising specialised tools to ensure the functionality of communication networks across various locations, adhering to strict safety regulations and technical standards.
Key responsibilities:
Installation and maintenance:
- Erecting and installing telecommunication cables on aerial lines, underground conduits, and poles.
- Joining cables and sealing sheaths using appropriate techniques.
- Installing and maintaining radio and mobile phone antennae.
- Installing telecommunications equipment and appliances like telephone lines, switchboards, and data transmission equipment.
Fault finding and repair:
- Locating faults in telecommunications lines using diagnostic tools
- Repairing damaged cables, connections, and equipment
- Replacing faulty components and restoring network functionality
Safety compliance:
- Adhering to all safety procedures related to working at heights, electrical hazards, and confined spaces
- Wearing appropriate protective gear and following safety protocols
- Completing required safety training and certifications
Technical skills:
- Reading and interpreting technical drawings and plans
- Knowledge of different cable types and splicing techniques
- Understanding of telecommunications network infrastructure
- Proficiency with various tools and equipment like cable cutters, tensioners, and test instruments
Physical demands:
- Ability to climb poles and work at heights
- Manual dexterity to handle cables and equipment
- Physical strength to lift and carry heavy equipment
